Pros and Cons for All Hollywood Studios Restaurants

Pros and Cons for All Hollywood Studios Restaurants

While Hollywood Studios isn’t known for its food, there are several good options at Hollywood Studios that you might choose for your trip.

Below, check out the pros and cons of all Hollywood Studios restaurants to help you decide where to eat during your trip.

Disney World dining basics

While dining at Disney World isn’t all that different than eating in the “real world,” there are few things to know about in order to make your experience easier.

Disney groups their restaurants into two main categories: Quick Service (which is like fast food) and Table Service (which are places that are a little bit nicer, where the food is brought to you).

Here is what you should know about each:

Quick Service

  • Sometimes referred to as “Counter Service”
  • Many locations offer Mobile Order which allows you to skip the line
  • Advanced Dining Reservations are not required or offered

Table Service

Commissary Lane

Commissary Lane only has two dining options available: the quick service ABC Commissary and table service Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant.

ABC Commissary

ABC Commissary has seen menu changes over the years and now there are a range of tasty choices for lunch and dinner.

While enjoying the Art Deco setting of the studio-inspired commissary, you can order a variety of salads and sandwiches as well as some plant-based options.

You can also usually find specialty, seasonal, or limited-time desserts.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

Location type: Casual Dining
Type of food: American
Meals Served: Lunch and dinner

  • On the Disney Dining Plan? Yes, 1 table service credit
  • Pros: Fun atmosphere where most people are seated in cars facing a screen that’s playing old movies, often easy to get a reservation, ribs and milkshakes are delicious (and shakes are a drink on the Disney Dining Plan!)
  • Cons: Food and service can be inconsistent, odd table configurations can be tricky for some families

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant is a unique dining experience at Hollywood Studios.

For either lunch or dinner, you sit in a car and eat as you watch classic footage of sci-fi movies as if you were at a drive-in back in the 50’s.

sci fi dine in theater menu hollywood studios

It really is fun and unlike anything you’ll experience on property, especially when it comes to dining.

sci fi dine in theater hollywood studios

The menu has a range of offerings, but the milkshakes are the highlight here.

Some of us on the WDW Prep School team, actually think these milkshakes are the best on property.

Reservations are accepted (and recommended) here.

Echo Lake

Located near the front of the park, Echo Lake is jam packed with dining options including one of our favorite character meals – Hollywood & Vine. In addition to the locations listed below, you can find funnel cakes at Oasis Canteen, frozen treats at Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream, and frozen drinks at Peevy’s Polar Pipeline.

Hollywood & Vine

Hollywood & Vine offers two different character dining opportunities. The first is the Disney Junior Play n’ Dine for breakfast with Disney Junior characters (Vampirina, Fancy Nancy, Doc McStuffins, and Goofy). The second is Minnie’s Seasonal Dining for lunch and dinner with Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto in rotating attire based on the season (Springtime, Summertime, Halloween, Holiday, and Silver Screen). All meals are served buffet-style.

Hollywood & Vine is the only character dining in Hollywood Studios.

For breakfast, you can meet Disney Junior characters. For lunch and dinner, you can meet Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto.

Regarding the latter, the themes change depending on the season and is known as “Minnie’s Seasonal Dining”.

'50s Prime Time Cafe

  • Pros: The restaurant is themed like you’re kids eating at your parents’ house in the 50’s, and the Cast Members will act like your family members, whether that means they’re snarky or sweet, the menu includes yummy comfort food and milkshakes
  • Cons: Some people may be turned off by the Cast Members’ acting if they’re hoping for a more traditional dining experience

If you want to revisit the 50’s and be told to “Get your elbows off the table!”, then Prime Time 50’s Café is for you.

This Table Service restaurant is themed-dining in the sense that servers will treat you like in your “mom’s kitchen” and will give you lessons about table etiquette. They may even hand out punishments.

50's prime time cafe hollywood studios

Overall, you can’t beat the theming. You definitely feel like you’re back in this retro era. You even get to watch TV while you eat dinner!

The food goes with the theme, too. From fried chicken, to pot pie, to meatloaf, to traditional desserts like pie and milkshakes, there’s a lot to choose from.

The Tune-In Lounge is attached to 50’s Prime Time Café. You don’t need a reservation, but you can go in here to get a drink.

The menu includes specialty cocktails, wine, and beer. We recommend the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen ‘Loaded,’ which comes with a shot of Deep Eddy’s Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka.

One of the most popular items is the Wookiee Cookie, which resembles an oatmeal creme pie.

The cookie recipe has changed over the years, so it does taste a different and a little more bland. That said you may like it! It also makes for great photos.

Grand Avenue

Grand Avenue is a charming stop on the way back to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. We absolutely love stopping for a beer and snack at BaseLine Tap House, plus Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano is a solid table service choice that is often not too hard to get into.

You can also find a snack and drink cart that sells churros and a gelato cart, both located near the entrance of Grand Avenue.

Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano sometimes gets lost in the mix of Table Service dining at Hollywood Studios.

It’s located all the way in the back of Grand Avenue.

baseline tap house pretzel and beer

The menu features a range of beverages, but know that the beers and wine offered are California-based. There are also different spirits available if you want something different or a cocktail.

If you need a snack, we recommend the Bavarian Pretzel served with beer-cheese fondue and spicy mustard.

The California Cheese and Charcuterie Plate also makes for a nice, light snack. You can even order it without the meat, if you prefer.

The restaurant is described by Disney as a “unique, fun, family-friendly dining experience,” where “guests will enjoy delicious barbecue fare while surrounded by a kaleidoscope of toys, games, and playsets that Andy has brought together to create his one-of-a-kind rodeo.”

Like Toy Story Land, Roundup Rodeo BBQ allows diners to “experience first-hand what it feels like to be one of Andy’s honorary toys, before progressing into two larger dining room spaces where Andy’s rodeo takes place.”

The dining location features western town and train station playsets, with surprising details, like the addition of fan-favorite Pixar characters that we’ve never seen before.

Reservations are accepted and we recommend booking one as soon as you can.

Woody’s Lunch Box

Location type: Quick Service
Type of food: American
Meals Served: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

  • On the Disney Dining Plan? Yes, 1 quick service credit
  • Is Mobile Order available? Yes
  • Pros: Fun atmosphere, one of the few places in Hollywood Studios to grab a Quick Service breakfast
  • Cons: It’s busy most of the day, so you may wait a long time for your food and/or struggle to find seating

One of the most popular dining locations in Hollywood Studios is Woody’s Lunch Box. You can order breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For a Quick Service location, the theming is on point and so is the food.

The Totchos (both the regular and plant-based options), the Lunch Box Tarts, and the Grilled Cheese are all solid choices. You also get decent portions for the prices, including when ordering from the kids menu (directly below).

Since Woody’s Lunchbox is so popular, we recommend placing a Mobile Order as soon as you can. Time slots go fast. You can even place a lunch or dinner Mobile Order in the mornings. You don’t have to wait until the time you want to eat. That’s the beauty of Mobile Order.

Also keep in mind that the seating area is small and is sometimes only available for people who’ve ordered from Woody’s Lunch Box. Cast Members may or may not try to control who sits here.

If you have more than one person in your group, you may want to have someone grab a table, while someone else picks up your order.
