Best Resorts for Families of 5 at Disney World

Best Resorts for Families of 5 at Disney World

Families or groups of more than 4 people often struggle to find an affordable resort for their Disney World trip, so to help, we’ve listed the resort options from least to most expensive to help families of 5+ decide what will work best for them.

Let’s take a look…

First things first

2 rooms might be better

Though the list below covers the rooms that accommodate 5+, it’s often much cheaper to just book 2 rooms at a resort that has a max capacity of 4 per room and then request connecting rooms.

Not only does this get you 4 “real” beds (instead of a sofa bed or trundle/day bed), you also get 2 full bathrooms this way.

If you have a family of 5+ with kids under 18, Disney will guarantee that you’ll get connecting rooms. If you decide to do that, it’ll just be 1 reservation and require the same deposit as if you booked just 1 room.

See the pros and cons of every Disney World resort for info on all the onsite resorts.

About the prices listed below

  • The starting prices reflect the cost per night during the least busy times of the year. Prices will be higher during busier times of the year.
  • The rates we’ve listed are full rack rates and don’t include tax or reflect any promotional discounts which are often available.
  • The “max capacity” is the number of people age 3+ allowed per room. A child under 3 is usually allowed in addition to that max capacity number.
  • For every resort, we only list out the least expensive options for families of 5. Most Deluxe, Deluxe Villa, and even 1 moderate (Coronado Springs) will have additional, larger (and more expensive) suites that can sleep more.

Our Favorite Disney Resorts for families of 5

We are going to cover nearly every option you’ll have for a family of 5 below, but if you just want to cut to the chase and check out what our personal favorites are (and why), here are our top picks:

All-Star Music Family Suites – Best Bang for the Buck

  • When it comes to the best bang for the buck, you can’t beat the All-Star Music Family Suites. These rooms offer plenty of space, a kitchenette, and 2 full bathrooms, all at a decent price.

Art of Animation Family Suites – Kid Friendly, Great Transportation Options

  • Not only are these suites adorably themed, they also come with 2 full bathrooms, a kitchenette, and easy access to the Disney Skyliner which makes getting to Epcot and Hollywood Studios a breeze.

Polynesian Villas and Bungalows Deluxe Studio – Room to Get Ready, Deluxe Accommodations

  • The Deluxe Studio Rooms at the Polynesian Villas and Bungalows have a clever split-bath layout that can make getting ready for a family of 5 way less stressful. Plus, their location at the resort puts you close to the Transportation and Ticket Center, which gives you easy access to both Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
  • The unique layout of these rooms is why we often recommend them over the standard Poly rooms:

Cabins at Fort Wilderness – Relaxing, Unique Experience

  • The Cabins at Fort Wilderness are almost like a vacation from your vacation. They come with a full kitchen and room to spread out. The Fort Wilderness Resort itself is huge and full of lots of activities for all ages. Because of the layout of the resort, we do recommend you rent a golf cart when staying here. Trust us on this – not only is it practical, it also just a lot of fun!
  • Important Note: Disney has announced that the Cabins will undergo a total refurbishment, reopening in 2024 as part of Disney Vacation Club. No word yet on when the closure will happen.

Fort Wilderness Cabin Refurbishment

Disney Vacation Club has unveiled plans for new DVC Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, set to open July 1, 2024. Sales for the new cabins begin on February 1, 2024 for existing DVC members and open to the general public on February 27, 2024.

If you want to stay in a cabin, here’s when you can start booking:

  • March 19 – Disney Vacation Club members can make rental reservations online or by contacting Member Services at (800) 800-9800.
  • March 20 – Walt Disney World Annual Passholder (APs) can book by calling (407) 934-7639.
  • March 21 – All guests can make reservations online or by contacting (407) 934-7639.

Unlike most refurbishments because these cabins are modular, the entire structures can be quickly swapped out, dramatically shortening the time frame needed to complete such a major overhaul.

Once finished, these private one-bedroom cabins, which can host up to six guests and include options for pets, are intended to immerse Walt Disney World visitors in nature while providing modern comforts.

For comparison, here’s a look at a current kitchen:

And here’s what the proposed update will look like:

You can see that the new design is a lot brighter, with less focus on the wood tones.

This is very apparent in the living space as well. Let’s compare those, next. Here’s the current design:

And here’s the new:

You still have the separate living area, but instead of a sofa bed, Disney will be incorporating one of the far superior (in our opinion) Murphy-style pull-down bed.

The bedroom will still house both a queen-sized bed and bunk beds, but the new version is just much brighter.

Here’s the old:

And the new, with a queen-size bed, twin-size bunk beds, and additional TV.

The brighter feel continues outside. Here’s the current design (note that there are just a few small windows:

And here’s the new, with floor-to-ceiling windows. Also included (like the original version) will be a personal patio deck with a charcoal grill:

Both the old and new versions still have just the 1 bathroom (one of the downsides to these cabins), and no in room laundry facilities, which is something you typically find in all other DVC rooms that are 1-bedroom or larger.

That’s about all we know for now. Additional details on the project, sales, and rental bookings are expected to be released later.

If you are not a member of the Disney Vacation Club, there are 2 ways to book a room in this category:

  • Renting DVC points through either an individual OR company

VIDEO: BEST resorts for families of 5 at Walt Disney World

Offsite Resorts for Families of 5 Near Walt Disney World

Families of 5 can save a lot of money by staying offsite. Just make sure you weigh the pros and cons of not being on property.

Before deciding to stay offsite

There are literally hundreds of options (far too many for us to list) so we’ve prioritized the resorts that are closest to Walt Disney World, including the Disney Springs and Bonnet Creek areas.

People staying offsite should consider that many/most offsite resorts have daily resort fees, parking fees, etc., and you need to review the perks of staying onsite to make sure it is your best option.

Also, offsite transportation is notoriously bad, and we recommend that if you do choose to stay offsite that you plan to drive yourself to the parks. Learn more in our parking at Disney World post.

Important note: The prices for the same dates at offsite resorts tend to fluctuate more than onsite options depending on when you book, occupancy rates, etc. Check with the resorts directly for the current prices.

Wish I read this sooner… we already booked outside the WDW resort because what was available on the Disney website was not good for us… our Kids are 9-12 and 17 so we need full beds. After reading this maybe I should have booked connecting rooms and stay on site…oh well, we’re going in 3 weeks. We’ll see. Love your site!

Hello, In the Caribbean Beach Resort there is a room that says they have a TWIN Murphy bed AND then on some other sites it states it is a 'child's' size bed. Does anyone know the actual size of the bed?

Hi Shannon, I love your podcast and website! I know this is an older post, but I needed your help. We were looking into reserving two rooms at the pop century resort since we will be 8 people traveling. I chatted with a cast member and they told me I would have to make two seperate reservations and therefore leave two seperate deposits of $200 each. Can you reserve two rooms and make only one deposit??

I hope you respond, but I've read that Disney WON'T guarantee connecting rooms for larger families? I have 4 children 10, 8, 7, and 2 at time of travel and really just wanted two rooms with a connecting door.

Shannon Albert

They will guarantee connecting rooms if the number of adults is less than the number of children.

Our family of 5 is already booked at the Ft. Wilderness Lodge. One of us is planning on taking our toddler back to the Lodge for naps, daily. I'm really nervous this will require a fair bit of time to go from any one of the parks to the room. Can someone give me an idea of how long this might take?
