Opening day for Walt Disney World Vacation Kingdom

Opening day for Walt Disney World Vacation Kingdom

After years of construction, the Walt Disney World Vacation Kingdom as it was called then officially opened on October 1, 1971, just as Roy had announced in 1969.

On that day, around 10,000 people paid $3.50 to enter, purchased a $4.25 coupon book that could be used on seven rides, and ate hot dogs that were 45 cents each.

Three weeks later, Roy Disney formally dedicated the resort to his late brother Walt who had passed on December 15, 1966, announcing his hopes: “May Walt Disney World bring joy and inspiration and new knowledge to all who come to this happy place.”
