What Is Key West Known For?

Key West is the largest island in Florida and measures 4 miles long and 2 miles wide. It’s also the southernmost point in the continental U.S.

In addition to beaches, tropical flavors, and exciting nightlife, Key West is full of history, specifically in the historic district known as “Old Town.” You can even tour Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams’ homes.

Since Key West is closer to Havana, Cuba than it is to Miami, Florida, Cuban immigrants transformed the population throughout the last century.

What Travel Information Should I Know?

From maps, to weather, to currency, to language, there’s different pieces of information you may want to know prior to visiting the Florida city.

Port Map

Here’s a map (courtesy of Google Maps) of Key West for you to browse.

Average Weather

Average annual weather for Key West, Florida

Here is a chart of the average annual weather for Key West, Florida via Weather.com.

Typically, Key West has the highest temperatures in August and the coolest temperatures in January with only a small amount of precipitation.

Language

English and Spanish are both spoken in Key West.

Currency

The U.S. dollar is the main form of currency.

Port WebCam

Key West port cam

You can visit KeyWest.com for real-time footage of Mallory Square, one of multiple ports. There are many other Key West web cams to also check out.

Which Ships Sail Here?

The Disney Wonder sails in and out of Key West, Florida for excursions to the Bahamas.

How Do I Get Around?

There are multiple ways to get around Key West, including walking, driving, public transportation, and rideshare services. It’s not a huge city with most people sticking to the Old Town area, meaning navigation is pretty easy overall.

Walking

Key West is definitely a walking town and navigable. If you’re concerned about safety, the official Disney Cruise Line website states that the city is “very safe,” but, as always, guests are encouraged to follow safety precautions, protect valuables, and be aware of their surroundings.

Taxi

There’s also the option of calling a taxi, including one of these:

  • Key West Taxi — (305) 296-6666
  • Key Lime Taxi — (305) 395-885
  • TaxiASAP — (305) 712-0111

Rideshare

Rideshare services are another option, including Uber and Lyft. Depending on the route and services, rates varies for rideshare and taxi companies.

Rent A Car

As stated on the Disney Cruise Line website, it’s not easy driving around Key West and parking can sometimes be difficult, so keep that in mind if you choose to rent a car. KeyWest.com admits that driving a car “may be more of a hindrance than a help.”

But, if you want to rent a car, Enterprise is located not far from the port (about a 10 to 15 minute drive). You can either make a reservation online or call (305) 292-0220.

Other Rentals

The most popular form of transportation throughout Key West are golf carts, scooters, and bike rentals. These are just two of many options:

  • A and M Rentals (scooters, bikes, and electric cars): Depending on what you rent, prices vary. There are two different locations in Key West. Call (305) 896-1921 for more information. You can also book online.
  • Tropical Rentals (scooters, bikes, and electric cars): Prices vary, but all three forms of transportation are available at the family-owned shop on Duval Street. You can make reservations by calling (305) 294-8136.

Many people also like to take a pedicab ride, which you can find throughout the city. Typically, pedicabs charge per minute.

Old Town Trolley Tours

If you’ve never been to Key West, an Old Town Trolley Tour is great for sightseeing. Plus, you’re able hop on and off all day long without any extra cost. There are one-day and two-day trolley tours that range from $42 to $68. If you book online, you can save money as well.

Key West Transit

Key West Transit is the city’s public bus system, which provides service throughout Key West and adjoining areas. Bus fares range in price, i.e. a full one day pass is $4 and a full one way pass is $2. You can view a live bus map on the Key West Transit website.

What Are The Port Must-Dos?

There’s so much to explore throughout Key West, but here are a few must-dos:

  • Mallory Square: Mallory Square is one of many docks in Key West. The square is also known for its daily street festival held at sunset.
  • Duval Street: Duval Street is a popular street where most people gather. You can check out bars, souvenir shops, art galleries, and more. Despite being only one mile long, Duval is called the “longest street in the world” since it starts at the Atlantic Ocean and ends at the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Southernmost Point: This is the southernmost point of the U.S. and there are signs, including a buoy, to take pictures with too.
