Answering Your Frequently Asked Disney Genie+ Questions

Ever since Disney World and Disneyland’s new paid FastPass system, aka Disney Genie+, was announced, the question have been endless.

And, yes, this means that FastPass+, FastPass, and MaxPass are officially retired.

We know it’s a lot of information and overwhelming, to say the least.

But, we are here to try to answer all the questions you may have about Disney Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lanes, and more.

Let’s get into it!

Disney Genie (and why we do not recommend it)

Before diving into Disney Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane Selections, we want to briefly go over Disney Genie — and why we don’t necessarily recommend it.

What is Disney Genie?

Disney Genie is a free digital planning tool service built into both the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps to help you “maximize your park time, so you can have more fun.”

disney genie breakdown

It includes a personalized itinerary feature that helps you map out an entire park day, tailored recommendations, and a custom tip board.

Disney Genie debuted on Oct. 19, 2021 at Disney World and on Dec. 8, 2021 at Disneyland.

Is Disney Genie worth my time and energy?

Our main focus of this post is to answer the most frequently asked questions we’ve received on the new pay-to-use FastPass system, both Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane Selections.

But, since Disney rolled out a new free feature in the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps called Disney Genie, we quickly want to explain why we don’t recommend it.

Plus, it’s just plain confusing to have basically 3 different services.

Any way, moving on…

We have an entire article written about the free Disney Genie, but while it may be handy for people totally unfamiliar with the parks, if you’ve done enough research to come here looking for answers to your questions, Disney Genie probably isn’t going to be for you.

It is an interesting idea. But in our experience, we’ve found that it doesn’t always help you tackle the most popular attractions or assist you with finding the *best* places to eat. In fact, it may even slow you down.

If you are still interested in learning more about the free Disney Genie service even after that not-so-glowing recommendation, you can check out our guide on how to use Disney Genie at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Disney Genie+ Questions

purchasing genie+ in my disney experience

What is Genie+?

Genie+ is the new paid-FastPass system. It’s similar to the now-retired MaxPass at Disneyland.

You choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions (like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Haunted Mansion, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run) and other experiences.

When your return time is called, you enter the attraction via the “Lightning Lane,” which is the new word for FastPass lines.

Genie+ also includes Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories, like augmented reality lenses for those visiting Disney World and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads for those at Disneyland.

This means guests at Disney World who purchase Genie+ do not get unlimited PhotoPass downloads.

When does Genie+ go into effect?

It is currently in operation.

Genie+ debuted on Oct. 19, 2021 at Disney World and on Dec. 8, 2021 at Disneyland.

How much Is Genie+ per day?

Genie+ offers guests the chance to skip the line for select attractions — for a daily fee.

Pricing is as follows:

  • Disney World: $15.98 (with tax) per ticket per day
  • Disneyland: $20 (no tax added) per ticket per day

Can you buy Lightning Lane without Genie+?

Disney World

  • Yes. Each park (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood, Animal Kingdom) has 1-2 attractions each that have Lightning Lanes but are NOT a part of Genie+. If you want to use the Lightning Lane at those attractions, you can pay-to-ride.

Disneyland

  • Yes. both parks (Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure) has 1-2 attractions each that have Lightning Lanes but are NOT a part of Genie+. If you want to use the Lightning Lane at those attractions, you can pay-to-ride.

Where can you access Genie+?

Disney World

  • It is built into the My Disney Experience app

Disneyland

  • It is built into the Disneyland app

When can you buy Genie+?

Disney World

  • For Walt Disney World guests, single-day purchases of Disney Genie+ are only available directly through the My Disney Experience app on your date of visit. There is no longer the option for advanced purchase.
  • Walt Disney World guests can begin purchasing Genie+ starting at 12 a.m. EST (and after).
    • This doesn’t mean you have to stay up until (or wake up at) midnight to do so, but simply means that once the day changes, you can start purchasing Genie+.

Important Genie+ Purchase Update

As of June 8, Disney Genie+ at Walt Disney World is only available to purchase through the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit.

This means, for the remaining dates in 2022 and in 2023, you no longer have the option to purchase Genie+ in advance prior to your trip as a ticket add-on.

Moving forward, whether you have an Annual Pass or multi- or single-day ticket, you may only purchase Genie+ on the day of your visit via the app, one day at a time, “subject to availability,” per Disney.

For those who already purchased a ticket that includes Genie+ for dates later in 2022, you will still be able to use the service during your visit.

Disneyland

  • Advanced Purchase: At Disneyland, guests can purchase Genie+ ahead of their visit only when it is purchased with a Disneyland ticket or vacation package.
  • Single Day/Day of purchases: Disneyland guests also have the option to make single-day purchases for Genie+. However, at Disneyland you can only purchase Genie+ after you’ve scanned into the park.

Do I have to get Genie+ for every day of my trip?

Disney World

  • No. You can pick and choose the days you want it. On the days you’d like to use it, you’ll purchase Genie+ as an in-app feature purchase.

Disneyland

  • No, but only if you do NOT purchase it as a ticket-add on or as part of a vacation package.
  • When Genie+ is purchased with a ticket or vacation package ahead of a visit, Genie+ is purchased for the entire length of your ticket (all days of a multi-day visit). This is true for:
    • Most standalone tickets at Disneyland
    • Vacation packages to Disneyland with these tickets
  • Otherwise at Disneyland, you’ll purchase Genie+ after you’ve scanned into the park each day you want to use it as an in-app feature purchase.
Disney Genie plus purchase options for Walt disney world

Can I purchase it ahead of time?

Disney World

  • Although you used to be able to purchase it ahead of time at Disney World, that is no longer the case.
  • On the day you wish to use it, you can purchase Genie+ starting at 12 a.m. EST (and after).
    • This doesn’t mean you have to stay up until (or wake up at) midnight to do so, but simply means that once the day changes, you can start purchasing Genie+.

Disneyland

  • At Disneyland, you can only buy Genie+ ahead of time when it is purchased with a Disneyland ticket or vacation package.
  • Disney has said that at Disneyland “when purchased ahead of time, you must purchase Genie+ for the entire length of your ticket (all days of a multi-day visit).
  • You’ll only pay for the Genie+ service for the length of your ticket (not the length of your hotel stay).
  • Otherwise, you’ll purchase Genie+ each day you want to use it as an in-app feature purchase.
how to purchase genie+

When purchasing Genie+ for entire length of stay, what about non-park days?

Disney World

  • Disney World guests are no longer able to purchase Genie+ in advance for the length of stay. Instead, you must purchase it day-by-day.

Disneyland

  • For eligible guests who choose to purchase Genie+ for their entire length of stay, you will only pay for the service on the days you plan to visit the parks.
  • Remember: When you purchase Genie+ for the length of your stay, the price is based upon your ticket length, not the number of nights in your hotel.
  • You don’t have to buy Genie+ for non-park days.

Does Genie+ offer perks for guests staying on-site?

Disney World

  • Not really, especially because all Disney World guests (both onsite and off) who have purchased Genie+ can book their first attraction starting at 7 a.m. EST.

Note: If your goal is to make your 1st selection right at 7 a.m., it probably makes the most sense to just purchase Genie+ a few minutes before 7 a.m. (instead of waiting up until midnight the night before) so that you are ready to go when the selection windows open. As we said above, there’s no advantage to purchasing it at midnight; you can’t make any selections until 7 a.m. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the new Genie service, we do recommend purchasing it before that 7 a.m. selection window opens up just so you get a feel for the new operating system.

Disneyland

  • Again, not really. All Disneyland guests (both those staying onsite and off) can start booking Genie+ selections once they enter the parks.

Does everyone in your group have to purchase Genie+?

Both Disney World & Disneyland

No, not everyone in your party has to buy Genie+.

If not everyone in your group wants Genie+ (or you want to save money), you can buy Genie+ on a day-to-day basis, instead of ahead of time for your entire length of stay.

If you’re eligible to (and choose to) purchase Genie+ for your entire length of stay, you will have to purchase the service for everyone in your party.

Keep in mind that if not everyone in your group has Genie+, they won’t have access to the Lightning Lane queue for select attractions.

This isn’t a situation where 1 person in a group can buy Genie+ and then get access to Lightning Lane queues for all guests in their party.

Can Genie+ sell out?

Disney World

Disney used to say that there was no limit on how many people can buy Genie+ on a daily basis.

But, their wording has changed since Genie+ first launched, and now when purchasing Genie+ on the day of your visit, Disney has said the service is “subject to availability.” It’s unclear what this disclaimer exactly means or if a limit will be placed on how many guests can purchase Genie+.

It appears that by only giving Disney World guests the option of buying Genie+ one day at a time is Disney’s way of reducing demand.

Also know that there is a limited number of Individual Lightning Lane purchases available each day, meaning these could sell out.

There is always a chance return times for select attractions will go faster than others and sometimes even run out for the day.

Disneyland

Even though Disney has changed their wording regarding Genie+ being “subject to availability” at Disney World, they haven’t said the same thing about Disneyland (at least not yet).

How does Genie+ work with groups?

Disney World

Guests are able to select eligible Genie+ people from their Family and Friends list in the My Disney Experience app when making Genie+ (and Lightning Lane) reservations, instead of everyone having to do it individually.

Of course, you need to make sure your travel party members are in your Family & Friends list, but they must have valid theme park admission and the same theme park reservation. Otherwise, their names won’t show up or they won’t be able to be added to your Genie+ selections.

Disneyland

At Disneyland, you also need to make sure both valid theme park admission is linked within the Disneyland app (for everyone in your party) and that you (and all guests in your party) have a theme park reservation in order to use Genie+ and book individual Lightning Lane selections.

Once you open the Disneyland app (and are also logged in), click the three lines in the bottom right-hand corner, select “Tickets and Passes,” and tap “Link Tickets & Passes” in the middle at the top.

disneyland app link park tickets

Then you can either scan your park admission or manually enter the ID number.

Make sure you do this for everyone in your group who will be using Genie+, so then you can make selections for everyone you’re touring the parks with throughout the day.

If you wish to skip the lines on those, you have to pay for an a la carte individual Lightning Lane pass. More on that below.

How many Genie+ selections can you make at a time?

Disney World

At Disney World, everyone with Genie+ can make their first selection starting at 7 a.m. EST.

Disneyland

At Disneyland, those who’ve purchased Genie+ can only make selections once inside the park.

Both Disney World and Disneyland

You’ll make one attraction selection at a time on the day of your visit, with the ability to make another reservation immediately after scanning into an attraction.

You have to redeem a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection before you can book another one — or you’ll have to wait 120 minutes from time of booking, whichever comes first.

You are only able to use Lightning Lane once per attraction per day (for both Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane).

For example: If you want to make a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection for Big Thunder Mountain, you can only use Genie+ once to ride Big Thunder Mountain on that particular day.

genie+ lightning lane selection booking times

Some other things to note for Genie+ at Disney World:

  • When booking a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection at 7 a.m. — before park opening — the 120-minute rule applies here as well. If you book a selection at 7 a.m. and the park doesn’t open until 9 a.m., you have to wait until 11 a.m. to make another selection.
  • Most of the time, you can book another Genie+ selection as soon as you enter the Lightning Lane. But, if you don’t scan into a ride, you’ll be able to make another selection at the end of the arrival window for the current selection.
  • If your first Genie+ Lightning Lane selection is farther out than 2 hours from park opening (like 1 p.m.), you’ll be able to make another selection 120 minutes following the official park opening time and will most likely be able to grab something earlier than 1 p.m.

Return times can overlap. You need to pay attention to this and make sure you have time for what you’re booking.

Important: Some Disney World attractions require you to scan your MagicBand (or card) at two touch points. If this is the case, you may have to wait to make another Genie+ selection until after the second scan.

If you think that all sounds confusing, that’s because it is.

How long are Genie+ return times?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

The return time window for Genie+ selections are 1 hour. This means you can redeem your Genie+ selection any time within this 1-hour window.

What if I miss my Genie+ return time?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

If you miss your Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation for an attraction, that’s it for the day. You won’t be able to make another one for that particular ride.

Sometimes you’re given a small grace period, but that’s up to the discretion of the Cast Member.

Tip: Set a reminder or alarm on your phone to alert you that it’s time to redeem your Genie+ selection.

What if a ride breaks down for one of my Genie+ selections?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

If a ride breaks down during your return time, you will receive a “Multiple Experience” just like the old FastPass and FastPass+ days.

Certain experiences won’t be included, but you’ll be able to choose another attraction to ride depending on what’s available.

Once the Multiple Experience converts to a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection, it counts as used, and you’ll be able to make another selection.

genie+ multiple experiences

What’s the point of Genie+ selections for shows at Disney World?

While there is no special or reserved seating, if you arrive near the beginning of your window you’ll be allowed to enter before other guests not using Genie+.

This means, especially on a busier day, that you’d most likely be guaranteed a seat and one possibly with a better view.

Can Genie+ selections be modified or canceled?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

Yes, these selections can be canceled and replaced with a new attraction reservation. But, you must cancel before the return time window ends.

Important: You can’t rebook or modify in the same window that you cancel. You’ll have to go through the whole rebooking process again, which is time-consuming and something to keep in mind.

cancel disney genie+ selection

Will attractions sell out of availability?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

There is always a chance return times for select attractions will go faster than others, and sometimes even run out for the day.

This is where you’ll have to prioritize certain rides over others and make sure you snag reservations for attractions at the top of your list, especially if you don’t want to wait in a Standby Line.

Tip: Return times for Slinky Dog Dash at Hollywood Studios go fast. If this is your top priority, book a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection ASAP.

Which one should you book first

Remember, you aren’t going to be able to pre-select your return time.

Genie+ is more like adding your name to the waiting list at a restaurant. You’re snagging the NEXT available spot in the Lightning Lane line; you don’t get to choose what that time is.

Do I need Genie+ work if I have Disability Access Service (DAS)?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

The Disability Access Service (DAS) program at Disney World and Disneyland now include the ability to enroll in the program pre-arrival and for DAS participants to select attractions directly in the app.

These options will be available in addition to the existing, in-person DAS program.

Pre-Arrival Registration

  • You now have the option to pre-register for DAS before you leave home.
  • This is done via a live video chat (offered in English only) with a Cast Member as early as 30 days in advance of your park visit.
  • During your chat with a Cast Member, you’re able to select up to 2 experiences per day (subject to availability) using the new DAS Advance planning option. This pre-selection option is new.
  • Once you’ve made your selections, if the experiences you choose have availability, you’re then given your return window that you can redeem on the day of your visit. Those return times will show up in your My Disney Experience account.
  • Per Disney: “Please keep in mind that DAS Advance selections must be booked at least 2 days prior to the day you plan to redeem them, and you will not be able to make selections on the day of your visit.”

Return Time Self-Selection

  • You also no have a new way to get return times when you are in the parks.
  • Instead of getting your return times by visiting an attraction and visiting with a Cast member, you are now able to do all of that inside the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

Also, know that Genie+ and the individual paid Lightning Lane attractions can be paired with DAS.

But, while the Advanced DAS Selections are free if you qualify for DAS, you’ll have to pay for Genie+ and the individual Lightning Lane Selections.

Can you use Genie+ during Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours at Disney World?

At this time, no you cannot make Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane attraction selections during Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.

How, if at all, will Genie+ affect Rider Switch and Single Rider?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

Rider Switch operates as normal alongside Genie+ at both Disney World and Disneyland.

But, everyone in your group who wants to use Genie+ with Rider Switch must have the attraction booked.

Single Rider lines remain at Disney World and Disneyland.

Is PhotoPass included in Genie+?

Disney World

  • No. Unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads are not included with a purchase of Genie+ at Disney Word.

Disneyland

  • Disneyland guests who purchase Genie+ will receive unlimited PhotoPass downloads.

What if you don’t have a smartphone?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

Now more than ever guests visiting Disney parks need a smartphone, especially when it comes to accessing virtual queues, placing mobile orders, and making Genie+ and additional Lightning Lane selections.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you won’t be able to utilize Genie+. You cannot use it via a web browser.

But, there are still Standby and Single Rider lines that don’t require the use of a smartphone or your credit card. Of course, they also don’t offer the same perks as Genie+.

An important note made by Disney about Genie+ at Walt Disney World

In March, Walt Disney World added the following update to its Genie+ webpage:

“On average, guests can enter 2 to 3 attractions or experiences per day using the Lightning Lane entrance if the first selection is made early in the day.”

disney world genie plus verbiage update

This is a big statement and one alerting guests that even if they start booking Genie+ selections early in the day, the chances of them gaining access to more than 2 to 3 rides or experiences in one single day might not happen.

It seems here that Disney is trying to simply lower expectations, especially for those who aren’t familiar with the parks or using a system like Genie+. It can certainly be a struggle and overwhelming.

We’ve always known that a Genie+ purchase never guarantees a full day of rides and experiences. But, it is supposed to be there to help guests lessen their wait times and hopefully help them enjoy a worthwhile Disney theme park experience.

As much as we want to tell you Genie+ will always work in your favor, we can’t. There are too many factors at play and it varies for different parties.

But, what we can do is try to help you to the best of our ability when it comes to navigating Genie+, providing tips on how to take advantage of the service, and, in the end, help you experience as much as possible at the parks.

It is possible to get on more than 2 to 3 attractions with Genie+, but you have to know what you’re doing and understand the ins and outs of Genie+. And that’s why we and all of our guides are here!

Lightning Lane Questions

Important Update to Genie+ & Individual Lightning Lane Selections at Walt Disney World

Through August 7, five attractions that had been only available as Individual Lightning Lane attractions will be included in the Genie+ service instead.

These attractions are as follows:

  • Magic Kingdom: Space Mountain
  • Epcot: Frozen Ever After AND Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (starting May 31)
  • Hollywood Studios: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
  • Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest

There are no changes to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, or Flight of Passage. These remain Individual Lightning Lane (pay-to-ride) attractions.

What’s a “Lightning Lane”?

This is the new name for FastPass/FastPass+ lanes.

Do you need Genie+ to get Lightning Lane?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

  • No, you don’t need to pay for Genie+ to get Lightning Lane.
  • There are Individual Lightning Lane attraction selections that are not included with Genie+. They are sold separately and are pay-per-use.

How many times can you use Disney Lightning Lane?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

  • Typically, whether the attraction is available with Genie+ OR if you are paying to use it because it is an Individual Lightning Lane Selection, you’ll only be able to use the Lightning Lane at each attraction once.
  • There are some exceptions to this rule, but for the vast majority of people, you can expect to just use the Lightning Lane one time per attraction.

What is the difference between Genie+ and Lightning Lane?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

  • Genie+: For the price of $15.98 per ticket per day at Disney World and $20 per ticket per day at Disneyland, Genie+ allows you to bypass the Standby Line using the Lightning Lane at select attractions across each theme park.
  • Individual Lightning Lane Selections: This pay-per-ride option allows you to purchase a time to ride select popular attractions at Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood, Animal Kingdom, Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure. Once your return time is called, you can board the attraction using the Lightning Lane.

When can I book Lightning Lane?

Disney World

  • Unlike Genie+ which doesn’t offer any perks to guests staying onsite at Disney World, the Individual Lightning Lane attractions do have a slight perk if you’re staying onsite:
    • Onsite Disney World Resort hotel guests can begin making these selections starting at 7 a.m. but Disney World guests staying offsite can’t start making selections until park opening — but, they don’t have to be inside the park to do so. Offsite guests just have to wait until the park officially opens before they can make a selection.

Disneyland

  • Disneyland guests can make individual Lightning Lane options once they enter the parks.
genie plus at disneyland and disney world graphic

Can you book Genie+ and Lightning Lane at the same time?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

Yes, you can have 1 person booking your Genie+ selection, while someone else purchases an Individual Lightning Lane.

This will give you a better chance of booking what you want (and 2 things at once).

But, if groups are going to have more than 1 person book Genie+ and pay-per-ride selections, we recommend everyone log into their own Disney accounts to avoid any conflict.

Disney World

Remember, at Disney World, if you’re staying offsite, you can’t make Individual Lightning Lane selections until park opening and your first Genie+ selection will be made prior to park opening at 7 a.m. So, these won’t be made at the same time.

If you’re staying offsite, you can have someone book 1 Lightning Lane, while a second person books the other (if you are purchasing the maximum of 2 daily Individual Lightning Lanes).

Disneyland

Disneyland guests can make individual Lightning Lane options once they enter the parks. Same with Genie+ bookings.

How much does Lightning Lane cost at Disney?

Pricing for this option varies by date, attraction, and park. Pricing typically ranges between $7 and $15 at Disney World and $7 and $20 at Disneyland.

You can check the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps on the day of your visit for current prices and attraction availability.

You can find pricing next to the individual Lightning Lane attraction.

On Sept. 23, 2021 the virtual queue was paused for Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios and on Jan. 10, 2022 for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Disneyland also paused the virtual queue for WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure on Nov. 4, 2021 and for Rise of the Resistance on Nov. 22, 2021. A standby queue is being used for all of these attractions.

How fast does Individual Lightning Lane selections sell out?

There’s a limited number of Individual Lightning Lane purchases available each day, meaning they could sell out.

Tip: In no surprise whatsoever, Rise of the Resistance remains a very popular ride, meaning individual Lightning Lane selections are also in high demand. These are known to sell out within seconds. The same can be said for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

How long do you wait in Lightning Lane?

Usually, this line allows you to board select attractions quicker than if you waited in Standby or used Single Rider.

Why? Simply put, since fewer people use Lightning Lane than Standby, it moves much quicker.

Here’s why:

For every attraction, at some point in the queue, the Standby and Lightning Lanes merge into 1.

When that happens, the Lightning Lane acts as a priority line; the Cast Member working the merge point will allow a higher ratio of people from the Lightning Lane to move forward compared to the Standby Line. For example, it could be for every 5 people in Standby, 20 people from the Lightning Lane go.

That means the wait time for the Lightning Lanes is significantly less than those in the Standby Line.

Can you cancel an Individual Lightning Lane?

At both Disney World and Disneyland, these purchases are final. You cannot cancel or modify.

What happens if a Lightning Lane ride is closed?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

If a ride goes down and never reopens during your visit that day, you should be refunded for that particular Individual Lightning Lane selection.

But, if the ride shuts down and then reopens during your visit, you will not be refunded. This applies to even if you choose not to ride the attraction. You already made the selection, so you will be charged.

If a ride goes down, your return time should be extended throughout the end of the day.

It’s also unclear if your original form of payment will be refunded or if you have to physically visit Guest Relations and ask for a refund. They may give you a gift card for the value of your purchase.

If you’re unsure, be sure to ask a Cast Member, a Guest Experience Team member (find them near the blue umbrellas in the parks at Disney World), or visit Guest Relations.

A standby queue is being used for all of these attractions.

No, virtual queues and Genie+ are different. They are 2 separate systems that are both built into the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

What is the difference between the virtual queue, Genie+, and Individual Lightning Lane Selections?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

  • Virtual queues: Disney’s virtual queue system like putting your name on a restaurant’s wait list. It’s essentially first-come, first-served — and free. But, instead of being put on a list, you are assigned a “boarding group” that gets called as space in the queue allows.
  • Genie+: You pay a daily fixed price of $15.98 per ticket, per day at Disney World or $20 per ticket, per day at Disneyland to use the Lightning Lane on qualifying attractions.
  • Individual Lightning Lane Selections: A pay-per-ride system with price varying based on date, attraction, and theme park. Each person can only book 2 Individual Lightning Lane Selections per day (can be in different theme parks if you have park hopper eligibility).

Is Disney’s Lightning Lane worth it?

To determine whether these 2 paid services are worth the time and money depends on the person — and what they want to get out of their Disney trip.

Is Disney Genie+ worth it?

Let’s break this down by park, because you don’t necessarily need to use Genie+ at each theme park at Walt Disney World.

As for Disneyland, we have other thoughts.

Magic Kingdom

We definitely suggest using Genie+ at Magic Kingdom. It has the most attractions out of any park at Disney World, and the extra cost makes sense, especially if you’re only planning to spend one day at the park.

Hollywood Studios

If Genie+ fits in your budget, we also think the purchase of the service here is worth it.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is the easiest park to tour without Genie+. If you are looking to save some money, we don’t recommend purchasing Genie+ here.

Animal Kingdom Genie Plus Priorities

Epcot

Genie+ can definitely come in handy during busy times of the year at Epcot, but if you’re traveling during less busy time of the year and you don’t mind standing in some lines (and possibly skipping breaks) you can get a lot done without it.

Genie+ priorities Epcot Book these first

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure

Genie+ is much easier to use on the west coast compared to Disney World. We’ve only used it a couple times here, but have had nothing but success.

Using Genie+ at both parks is worth it. Plus, PhotoPass is included in the Genie+ purchase here and that’s an added bonus.

Genie+ functions better at Disneyland due to the equal playing field of when guests can make Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane selections — once they are physically inside the park (not beforehand like at Walt Disney World).

Pay-per-ride selections also don’t run out as quickly at Disneyland like they do at Disney World since you can’t pick a future time – you can only book the next available time slot.

Returns times are usually much sooner at Disneyland than they are at Disney World, meaning you can ride more attractions and make bookings much more quickly.

So, yes, Genie+ is worth it at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, especially if you’re taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip or have a lengthy trip booked and want to ride all the attractions.

Is Lightning Lane at Disney worth it?

Both Disney World and Disneyland

If you have the time and money, you might have zero problem paying for Individual Lightning Lane Selections, which are usually only available with the extremely popular attractions.

DL and WDW Individual Lightning Lane attractions

Unless you just don’t mind spending the money, you should maybe only think about using them on the attraction(s) that are your top rides.

Otherwise, we recommend hitting up those lines by rope dropping, jumping in line at the end of the night, or during Early Theme Park Entry and/or Extended Evening Hours at Disney World.

There’s no denying that planning Disney vacations are now very different thanks to Genie, Genie+, and Individual Lightning Lane selections.

If all of this sounds too stressful, you can always use a Disney travel agent and we recommend Small World Vacations for planning both Disney World and Disneyland trips.
