The Hanami outdoor kitchen can be found in the Japan pavilion.
It offers a range of Japanese-inspired dishes and cocktails. Yes, this includes sake. This year, there’s even a Hakushika Hana Kohaku Plum Sake.
Every year, one of the most popular items at this booth is the “Frushi,” which is strawberry, pineapple, and lychee wrapped in sweet rice and pink soy wrap served with whipped cream, drizzled raspberry sauce, and toasted coconut.
We haven’t always loved the Fruishi, but some of us enjoyed it this year much more compared to 2022.
We were also pleasantly surprised by the Creamy Shrimp Udon and the Sakura Cherry Blossom Pilsner.

When it comes to our reviews and ratings, we thought it would be helpful if you had a better understanding of our personal preferences (what we like and don’t like), along with if there are any dietary restrictions.
Here’s a breakdown of not only who is doing the reviews, but a little more information about what each of us likes and doesn’t like food and drink-wise.
Shannon (Founder)
- Likes: Almost everything
- Dislikes: Beers that taste “stinky,” anything too salty
- Dietary Restrictions: None
Heather (Editor)
- Likes: Strong flavors, anything made out of potatoes, white wines, all beers (especially stouts and wheat beers), doesn’t mind sweet (plain fruit is NOT a dessert. Ever.)
- Dislikes: Things that are too spicy, anything with a bone still in it, cocktails with too much whiskey or tequila (thanks to having too much fun in college), some red wines, most IPAs
- Dietary Restrictions: Shellfish allergy
Felicia (Content Manager)
- Likes: Mezcal, savory drinks, stouts/lagers/wheats/sour beers, vinegar, tart/sour items, chocolate, fresh vegetables and fruits, red meat
- Dislikes: Ciders, sweet drinks, anything milky or creamy, chili powder, cumin, weirded out by textures, mayonnaise, saucy/wet food, cream-filled pastries, artificial fruit flavors, cooked fruits, frozen items (drinks or ice cream)
- Dietary Restrictions: None
Allyson (Managing Writer)

- Dislikes: Wine (only likes a few dry ones), cream ales and stouts/porters, super sweet cocktails, floral flavors (lavender, rose), anything almond-flavored, things that are too spicy, olives, meat and seafood (see below)
- Dietary Restrictions: Vegetarian (personal choice)
Photos & Reviews
Frushi
Frushi is strawberry, pineapple, and lychee wrapped in sweet rice and pink soy wrap served with whipped cream, drizzled raspberry sauce, and toasted coconut
Our Thoughts
Shannon: Looks cuter than it tastes.
Heather: Over hyped. I don’t like it.
Felicia: This is a lot better than last year. Tastes like fresh fruit and whipped cream. It’s not as good as people have pretended it is, but it’s pretty good.
Allyson: Not sure I understand all the craze about this. Not my favorite.
Hanami Sushi
Assorted Nigiri sushi with lemon-cured salmon, soy-marinated tuna, and cured mackerel. This is a new festival item for 2023.
Our Thoughts
Shannon: Nice little trio. Slightly salty.
Heather: I just can’t do sushi when it is 150 degrees out. It is definitely light – but kind of has an odd texture.
Felicia: This is good nigiri. But not something I want to eat from a festival booth. Not bad though.
Creamy Shrimp Udon
Creamy Shrimp Udon is udon soup with shrimp and spring vegetables. This is a new festival item for 2023.
Our Thoughts
Shannon: Visually turned off, but pleasantly surprised by good flavors. Nice portion. Hard to imagine eating when it’s hot outside.
Felicia: The broth flavor is delicious and not too heavy. If I was in a restaurant, I would order this and love it. But not what I want to eat in the heat. The broth is creamy and light.
Sakura Cherry Blossom Pilsner
Sakura Cherry Blossom Pilsner. This is a new festival drink for 2023.
Our Thoughts
Shannon: So bitter. No thanks.
Heather: The floral notes are subtle but definitely there. A really light and fresh beer.
Felicia: I really liked this. Slight hoppy-ness to it and the hint of cherry blossom. Thought it was a good and unique beer.
Allyson: Not sure I taste any cherry. It’s an ok beer. Not horrible, but just ok.
Hakushika Hana Kohaku Plum Sake
The Hakushika Hana Kohaku Plum Sake is junmai ginjo sake blended with Japanese plum extract. This is a new festival drink for 2023.
Our Thoughts
Shannon: Cute cup, too sweet.
Heather: I would call this an easy to drink sake. But it is sweet…so, go in with a warning.
Felicia: Sugar water with the funk of sake.
Allyson: If I could give this a 0 I would. Absolutely not. No thank you. It made me gag a little.
Nigori Dragon Fruit Sake Cocktail
This is the Nigori Dragon Fruit Sake Cocktail. This is a new festival drink for 2023.
Our Thoughts
Shannon: Pretty color, artificial sugar sweet.
Heather: So very pretty just super duper sweet.
Felicia: This is sweeter than I prefer, but the flavor is delicious and fun. I wouldn’t order it but think people that like fruity cocktails would like it.
Allyson: Not sure how I feel about this. It’s thicker than I’d like a drink to be and reminds me of Amoxicillin.
