Weather at Disney World: What to Expect Each Month

Weather at Disney World: What to Expect Each Month

Sometimes we like to joke that Disney World has 2 seasons: 1st summer, and 2nd summer.

And, while that isn’t exactly true, for a large portion of the year, the weather at Walt Disney World is definitely summer-like. But, there are some months of the year when things do cool off a bit, too.

Here’s what you can expect the weather to be like at Disney World:

Which month has the best weather at Disney World?

Hands down, if looking strictly at the weather and things like average temperatures and rainfall, we think January and February are the best months to visit Walt Disney World.

That’s because in both January and February, the temperatures are cool and the chances of rain are low, which are just about a perfect combination in our books.

Now, to be fair, there are some downsides to traveling in January and February. In particular, there are some big events and holidays during those 2 months that can really cause the crowds to increase in the parks.

But do you know what makes handling the crowds a lot easier to manage?

Cool temps. And beautiful breezes. And blue skies. Ahhhh, sounds like bliss, to us!

Because covering the Disney World parks is our job, we visit the Orlando area monthly, so we know first-hand just what each month brings.

And by far, we find January and February to be our favorite months to head to Walt Disney World.

What is the weather like at Disney World?

Ready to break it all down, month-by-month?

Here’s what you can expect to see, but remember, these are just averages.

There is always the chance that things could be hotter or colder or wetter or drier.

The closer you get to your trip, the more accurate the forecasts will be – so make sure you triple check the predictions right before you leave.

January

  • Average high temperature: 71°F / 22°C
  • Average low temperature: 52°F / 11°C
  • Average rainfall: 2.48″

If you prefer cooler temperatures and low humidity, January is the month for you.

But even though the temps range from lows in the 50s to highs in the 70s, remember those are just averages.

It isn’t unusual to see those lows dip into the 30s and the highs to climb into the 80s.

Layers are a necessity during this time of the year. Even the characters wear long sleeves and jackets in January.

In addition to cool temps, January also sees some of the least amounts of rain, with an average of fewer than 3 inches per month.

That combination (cool temps, low humidity, and minimal rain) helps make January a pleasant time to visit.

  • Average low temperature: 54°F / 12°C
  • Average rainfall: 2.04″

But even though the rain chances aren’t as high, we still recommend that you come prepared with ponchos, multiple pairs of shoes (in case one pair gets wet), and umbrellas just in case. Nothing can ruin a trip faster than blisters from wet shoes.

Does it ever get cold at Disney World?

If you only visit during the blazing summer you may not believe that there are actually a few days during the year when it can be downright chilly at Disney World!

We promise we aren’t lying. During the winter months, there are always a few days of the year when the temps dip down and people head to the parks in jackets and coats.

But, those days can be hard to predict and even on days when the evening and morning temperatures are chilly you may be just fine during the middle of the day.

Dress in layers

That is why we strongly recommend you wear layers from around December through February.

Trust us on this one: layers are your friend. Things that you can tie around your waist and easily slip off and on are especially handy during the winter months.

Not only can the parks get chilly, but the restaurants and even some attractions may be a bit too cold, too.

Caught off guard? Check the shops.

If you find yourself in the parks without a jacket during a cold snap, you don’t have to freeze.

Disney usually has a decent sized selection of jackets, coats, and even gloves, and hats for guests.

Of course, you’ll be paying theme park prices, BUT you won’t be freezing!

We have more than 1 sweatshirt we’ve purchased after underestimating our ability to handle the nighttime temps. Oops!

How hot is Disney World in the summer?

We really wish there was an easier way to say this, but, Disney World in the summer is just plain ‘ol hot and humid.

The temps really start to inch up in late March-April, but by the time you get to June, July, and August, things are just blazing.

But, just because it is hot doesn’t mean that you can’t have a good time.

We have an entire post FULL of tips and suggestions for beating the heat at Walt Disney World.

Hi, is the photo of the boy with the spray fan yours? If so, your boy is a doppelgänger of my son. I've been staring at that picture forever trying to figure out if it is my son.

Ha! Weird. It does look like my son used to when he was younger, but it's just a stock photo from 2012.

We usually go in late August or September, so it’s still extremely hot and rainy. For the heat, we do the get up early leave after lunch, but when we tour the parks, we try to do an indoor attraction and then an outdoor attraction. Just to give us a slight chance to cool down. Oh, and the body glide works great on those hot spots on your feet! I couldn’t believe the difference it made!

Our September trip last year saw every day with a heat index between 100 and 105. We waited way too long to buy the blue Disney $20 fan. I kept finding myself a little upset that Disney hadn't implemented more ways to make things good when the weather is too hot or rainy for a full week. It seems that by now they would have more air conditioned spaces both at parks and at resorts where kids can enjoy free play. Epcot Future World has a few, and there's the Dumbo line, but... We would take a break and go back to the hotel room, but the kids wouldn't rest, they would be recharged in the A/C and bouncing off the walls of a small room. So, we'd trek to the pool, and they would get too tired out in the sun (though cooled by the water) to be in a good mood for evening activities. Anyway, I just wanted to add that cooling towels and the spray fans helped. :) I'd wish I'd known in advance about the chafing because that was definitely an issue I hadn't had before!

We parked our stroller outside Be Our Guest in good weather without the cover on it. It started pouring rain as we came out. Lesson learned. After that we covered the stroller every time we had to park it, rain or shine. The weather there can change quickly!

Walmart's great for dried fruit, nuts, chips. Bring a small water bottle, less weight, and refill it at the soda fountains with cold filtered water.
